Here are key lessons I learned from How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie:

  • You can only influence other people is to talk about what they want and show them how to get it. Appreciation and empathy are two powerful weapons that you can use to get what you want from people.
  • When you fail, remember you’re just a man and don’t give up. When you succeed, remember you’re just a man and don’t put others down.
  • People have an innate desire to feel worthy. Show appreciation to those who deserve it, you’ll get their cooperation much easier than if you didn’t. Be careful to not mistake appreciation with false flattery, which is a dishonest imitation of gratitude.
  • Frame your requests in a way that all parties understand that the outcome is a win-win. You don’t want to be perceived that you’re only acting on your self-interest even if that’s true.
